How to Find Turriedale
Ordnance Survey Map Ref: hy 355 126 (sheet 6)
From Stromness (8.4 miles journey time estimate less than 15 mins)
Set your car trip meter to 0.0 Miles . Turn right as you leave the ferry. After 400yrds you will reach a mini-roundabout. Take the third exit. Follow the road up and over the hill (1.8 miles) then turn right at the T-junction onto the A965. (Look for seals on your left as you cross a small bridge).
Stay on this road, through Stenness village, (3.2miles) Keep going past Maeshowe on your left and Tormiston Mill on your right (4.5miles). Keep going on the A965 until you reach Finstown (6.9miles).
Enter Finstown and pass Baikies stores on your right, The Pomona Pub on your right and the A966 road to Evie on your left. Go a further 50 Yards past the junction with the A966 (Do not take the A966) and turn right past the Kirk into the steep Heddle Road (7.5miles).
Drive up the Hill of Heddle and past the Large Quarry at the top on your right. Drive over the Hill and down the other side for 0.2 of a mile. You have arrived. (8.4miles)
From Kirkwall Airport (journey time estimate maximum 20 mins)
Turn right as you exit the airport and follow the A960 to Kirkwall. Do not turn off the road and you will arrive in the centre of Kirkwall with the Cathedral on your right.
Turn left (compulsory) at the Clydesdale Bank and turn right at the next cross-roads. (Ford dealer on your right). Continue past the Post Office and after 200m you come to T-junction with a small round-about. Take the first exit road to the left.
Keep on this road, past the Peedie Sea on your left and after a few hundred yards cross straight over another small roundabout, (second exit) past the garage on your left and continue signposted to Finstown.
This is about seven miles straight along the A965. Enter Finstown and after a few hundred yards look out for the Cemetery on your left followed by a Builders Yard called Allans of Gillock also on your left.
Turn left immediately past this yard into Heddle Road. Drive up the Hill of Heddle and past the Quarry at the top on your right. Drive over the Hill and down the other side for 0.2 mile. You have arrived.
From Kirkwall Hatston Pier (journey time estimate less than 10 mins)
Turn right on leaving the Ferry complex. After 250 Yrds arrive at a T junction with the A965. Turn right and follow the A965 to Finstown.
Enter Finstown and after a few hundred yards look out for the Cementry on your left followed by a Builders Yard called Allans of Gillock also on your left. Turn left immediately past this yard into Heddle Road. Drive up the Hill of Heddle and past the Quarry at the top on your right. Drive over the Hill and down the other side for half a mile. You have arrived.
From the South Isles Ferries/St Margaret's Hope (journey time estimate 35-45 mins)
Follow the A961 signs to Kirkwall and enter. Locate St.Magnus Cathedral. Make sure it is on the right side of your vehicle and follow the directions as from the Airport above.
NOTE : Turriedale is the white croft located just off the roadside on the brae of the Hill of Heddle. On the left hand side just beneath the brae of the hill.
